Hello! Kept the aperture at f/5.6, zoomed in to make the background blurrier and add more focus to the subject. This picture is almost a candid one. She was just about to fix her hair when I asked her to let it be and just look up and smile!

Hello, Oliviya!

Оценка работы

The emotion and the joy you bring across in this portrait is great!

The hair gives it a certain attitude, so that the figure is more natural, less staged.

You’ve picked a great camera angle, directing our attention to the model’s gaze.

Using portrait orientation accentuates the model’s pose.

The aperture is just slightly open, giving you a short depth of field; the blurred background focuses our attention on the portrait itself.

The negative exposure compensation makes the shot darker, more saturated.

Замечания и рекомендации

Unfortunately the model’s face does not fall within the field of focus, the camera has slightly overshot the focal point.

The focus should be on the eyes, as this is the most important part of the subject. In order to focus more accurately, you could choose a focus point on the camera. On the display, the focus should fall upon the model’s eyes.

You could try focussing on the centre of the picture. The central point will hold the focus better. To do this, rearrange the shot so that the centre is on the area that should be in sharp focus. Press the shutter in halfway, and the camera will adjust the sharpness. Then you will need to compose the shot while holding down the shutter. Once you have composed the image, press the shutter all the way down and take the picture.

The portrait has come out a little dark, so you will want to increase the exposure a little to better bring out the detail in the shadows.

With portraits, it better to shoot in Av (aperture priority) mode. In this mode you can manually choose the f-number for the aperture; the lower the number, the lower the depth of the field will be. It’s important to have a low depth of field in portraits, as a blurred background will properly highlight the figure of the model in the foreground. Av mode is semi-automatic – the camera will choose the shutter speed by itself.

Try not to crop your portrait at the joints – the elbows – the borders of the picture should preferably be lower down so that you show the whole arm, or otherwise higher up, and the portrait shot in close-up.

You should ideally choose something plain for the background for your portrait, the wheel has a regular shape and even when blurred remains visually ‘active,’ attracting attention away from the portrait itself.

Выводы

I’m going to suggest you work a little more on this assignment. I’m sure you can do better!
