Respect yourself (portrait)

Taking a self-portrait is great creative practice for any photographer: it allows you as much time as you need with your model, at no extra cost. Plus, you'll be highly motivated to make yourself look good. You can start by taking a photo in the mirror or just holding your camera out in front of you. Review the tips below for more ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

Tip #1: Let there be (good) light

A flattering portrait requires flattering light, so move to the nearest window or go outside to find the best light available. Still no good? Wait for the magic hour, near sunrise or sunset. Set your camera to Auto (A+) mode or experiment with Portrait mode (look for an outline of a head on your mode dial).

Tip #2: Express yourself

Don't be shy — have some fun! Try different poses and set up your camera at different angles. Why not change your clothes, add sunglasses or a hat? Choose a prop or two that will help convey your personality, such as your prized ukulele, your motorcycle boots, or your collection of rare first editions.

Tip #3: Think outside the mirror

A mirror isn't the only place you can catch a nice reflection of yourself. Look for more reflective surfaces outdoors — in shop windows, a car windshield, or even in a pool of water. For a change of pace, you could also photograph your shadow in the evening.

Tip #4: Don't get lost

As always, pay attention to the background! Don't lose the subject — in this case, yourself — amid busy details or bright objects behind you.
